Schiff: Impeachment Will Be Difficult Without ‘Very Graphic Evidence’

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff, D-Calif. warned Monday that removing President Trump from office would be virtually impossible without “very graphic” evidence that is “pretty overwhelming.”

“In the absence of very graphic evidence,” Schiff told CNN Senior Congressional Correspondent Manu Raju, “it would be difficult to get the support in the Senate needed to make an impeachment successful. So again, my feeling is, let’s see what Bob Mueller produces, but the evidence will have to be pretty overwhelming.”

Schiff’s remarks come a day after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi bucked calls from Democrats to impeach Trump.

The 17-term California Democrat recalled the divisiveness of President Bill Clinton’s impeachment was “horrible for the country” and noted that she would not be willing to go through that again without “overwhelming and bipartisan justification.”

“Impeachment is so divisive to the country that unless there’s something so compelling and overwhelming and bipartisan, I don’t think we should go down that path, because it divides the country. And he’s just not worth it,” Pelosi told The Washington Post.

Yet, the Democratic base overwhelming want Congress to oust Trump, with two-thirds of Democrat voters saying the president should be removed from office, according to a Quinnipiac University poll.

House Democrats have previously introduced articles of impeachment. Rep. Rashida Tlaib, the freshman Michigan Democrat who reigned in her first day as a new member of Congress vowing to “impeach the motherfucker,” pledges to introduce House resolution to “begin investigating the impeachable offenses” of the president by the end of the month.

“That doesn’t mean we’re voting on it,” she told reporters last week. “It means we’re beginning the process to look at some of these alleged claims of impeachable offenses.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders urged Democrat lawmakers to “get on board” with Pelosi.

“I’m glad that she sees what the rest of us see and that there’s no reason, no cause for impeachment,” Sanders said on Fox News’ Outnumbered Tuesday. “The president’s done an incredible job in his first two years in office. The county is better than it’s been in decades.”

Democrats are only resorting to impeachment because they are still outraged over the results of the 2016 presidential election.
